What is a Resale Certificate?

A resale certificate is part of the seller's permit.  A seller's permit is a tax id number that allows you to buy wholesale from suppliers and resell what you buy retail collecting sales tax.  You need the seller's permit do do both of these: buy wholesale or sell retail. 

So what is the resale certificate for?

You issue a resale certificate when you want to buy wholesale from a supplier.  When you do present it to the supplier, you in effect say to him or her that you certify that you hold a seller's permit number, which you enter on the certificate along with your business information. 

Why does the supplier wants a resale certificate?  

The supplier verifies that you hold a seller's permit and so he sells to you wholesale ( i.e., sells merchandise to you tax free).
You obtain it tax free because you will "resell," it.  Thus, the name "resale".

Do I need to pay to obtain a resale certificate?  

If you hire us to obtain a seller's permit, you don't have to pay for it because we provide one for free when we present you with the officially filed seller's permit. 


What is a Reseller's  Permit

A Reseller's permit is called "Reseller's ," because you can Resell e.g., merchandise you bought tax free (wholesale) and collect sales tax from your retail sales  so you can eventually turn these sums of sales tax to the state.  In addition, it functions as a wholesale permit or a seller's permit ( they are all the same license) so you can buy merchandise or anything that is subject to Reseller's tax without paying wholesale. It is another name for sales tax ID or seller's permit.  If you obtain one, you will be able to buy wholesale by issuing a resale certificate with the wholesale tax number to wholesale suppliers as well as sell retail, collect sales tax and remit it quarterly to the state. 



Reseller's permit vs. business permit?

A business permit is generally  a business tax registration that the government issues and allows you to operate your business in your type of business, in your county, city, and state.

Which type of permit you will need and the requirements vary depending on the state however, in 99% of the cases, all businesses need a business permit also called a business license, business tax registration, or home occupation permit.

Why Does The Government Requires a Business Permit? 

In addition to a flat annual fee ( usually about $50) a
business permit is required because  public health can be an issue with the business ( e.g., restaurant).
